How it Works

When preparing your taxes, include:

1.  Nonprofit Name: We Don’t Waste

2.  We Don’t Waste’s Secretary of State CCSA Registration Number: 20123006737

*Both name and number are required to efficiently and accurately make sure that the nonprofit the taxpayer intended gets the donation*

3.  Amount of donation

When making a donation through Donate to a Colorado Nonprofit Fund the taxpayer can:

  • Only designate ONE write-in nonprofit
  • Give all or a part of their refund
  • Only give up to the amount of their total refund (donations over the refund amount are void)


Note: Different tax filing software programs (like TurboTax) will display prompts for tax filers getting refunds in various ways and donors will have to look for “Donate to a Colorado Fund.” If a donor is using a tax preparer, like H&R Block or a CPA, the donor will need to inform the tax preparer to include the nonprofit’s name, CCSA registration number and amount.

We Don’t Waste has partnered with Vehicles For Charity to process donated vehicles. Call 1-866-628-2277 they will answer any other questions you may have and make arrangements to pick up your donation.

What can I donate?

You can donate most any vehicle, including cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles and recreational vehicles. They do not have to be currently running. Your vehicle donation will be sold at an auction or to salvage depending on condition.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes, We Don’t Waste is a non-profit organization and all donations qualify as a charitable deduction on your federal income tax return.

What do I need to donate my car?

The title to the car must be in your name. We will also need some information about where the car is located and the condition of the car. This will assist us in scheduling appropriate towing arrangements.

Will you pick up my car?

A towing company will call you to schedule the pick-up of your vehicle. You will need to give the driver the keys to the vehicle as well as your signed title.

How is the value of my car determined?

The IRS allows you to take a charitable tax deduction on your federal income tax form equal to the amount the vehicle sells for at auction unless it sells for less than $500. If your vehicle sells for less than $500 you may deduct no more than $500. If your vehicle sells for more than $500, you will need to include the IRS form 1098C. Vehicles for Charity will supply this documentation after your vehicle sells. We recommend you consult your tax advisor with questions about your deduction.

A DAF is a centralized vehicle for charitable giving that makes it easy for donors to dedicate funds to support their favorite nonprofit organization. It also provides an operationally convenient and tax-efficient method for donors to manage their charitable giving.

With a DAF, charitably inclined individuals, families, and businesses make an irrevocable gift to a public charity that sponsors a donor-advised fund program, and may take an immediate tax deduction. Donors can then recommend grants over time to IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) public charities. DAFs also allow donors to approach their charitable giving thoughtfully by involving other family members or colleagues in their philanthropic decisions. Most DAFs accept donations of long-term appreciated securities and other assets, and donors can advise how the funds are invested, which could potentially allow tax-free growth, and could result in more money for your charity.

How can my company get involved?

We Don’t Waste loves our corporate donors. We have 2 big events annually where we welcome sponsorship: Fill a Plate for Hunger and Canstruction®. We also have volunteer opportunities for corporations that are looking for team-building activities and want to give back to the community! How do I donate food?

We’re always looking for new food donors! If you work for a company/food distributor/etc that would like to donate food, please review our Food Donation Guidelines. Food donors are protected by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act. Please note that we do not accept food that is spoiled or unsafe to eat.

What if I'd like to host a canned food drive?

I'm worried that my donation didn't go through.

We’ve heard from some donors using google chrome as their web browser, that they get an error message even though the donation is going through. If you don’t receive an emailed receipt within an hour of submitting your donation, please contact kyle@wedontwaste.org and we’ll be happy to troubleshoot the problem.
