Bread is one of the most wasted foods in the U.S., with approximately 133 billion pounds wasted each year. Let’s change that over a cold one.
Here’s how we made The Wheat don’t Waste ale:
We Don’t Waste works with incredible local businesses dedicated to reducing their surplus and food waste through their partnership. One of these incredible partners, Rebel Bread, donates surplus bread product to We Don’t Waste. Normally, this bread would be distributed to We Don’t Waste’s nonprofit partners and Mobile Food Markets across Denver. This time, we saved a few spare pounds of loaves for this event.
The master brewer at the Odell Brewing Co. Sloan’s Lake location adds the bread loaves into the mash, letting it simmer and infusing the warm, wheaty flavors of the bread into the beer to give it the smooth taste we enjoy in wheat ales. Plus, a new addition this year, we added some recovered citrus to give it a fresh kick!
After the beer is brewed, the used, spare mash is donated to feed local pigs, and the beer is ready to be chilled and kegged for pouring at the Sloan’s Lake Brewhouse! You’ll notice the full body of the wheat ale will have the taste of the sourdough added to the mash. Enjoy!
